A Connecticut porch collapsed over the weekend, injuring at least 30 college students. The porch was crowded with college partiers in Hartford, Connecticut, near Trinity College, sending more than 20 people to the hospital to be treated for injuries, Reuters reported.

“I heard the wood cracking above me,” Julianna Leone, a Trinity senior who was on the second-floor porch during the collapse, told the Hartford Courant. “I looked at my friend and I thought to myself, this couldn’t be happening. I just screamed. There was nothing we could do. We couldn’t get off. We were just trapped there.”

The party was hosted by members of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity as it was the first weekend students were back on campus, Hartford Courant noted. The collapse took place a little after 11 p.m. Saturday.

ABC News reported that “the deck was old and not structurally sound.” A broken arm ended up being the worst injury of the 30 or more students who were hurt during the collapse, ABC News noted.

“We are very lucky that there were no fatalities and no known critical injuries from what could have been a truly tragic incident,” Mayor Luke Bronin said in a statement.

Police and first responders came to the scene immediately to aid those who were injured from the collapse, and they were commended by Bronin for working “quickly and professionally to identify the injured students” and transporting them safely to local hospitals.

Hartford Police Department Deputy Chief Brian Foley also commented on the incident, releasing a statement via Twitter, saying “the third-floor porch collapsed onto the second-floor one, which then fell to the first floor.”

According to ABC News, Trinity College later released a statement, saying “We have confirmed that a total of 28 students were transported to five area hospitals. College staff went to the hospitals to be with the students and assist with getting in touch with the students’ families and with providing transportation back to campus. At this time, the majority of the students have been treated and discharged by hospitals and the College will remain in direct contact with those students who remain in treatment.”
