Conn. School Shooter Was Adam Lanza, Not His Brother Ryan

By    |   Friday, 14 Dec 2012 04:45 PM

At first, police said a 24-year-old man named Ryan Lanza was the suspect in the mass school shooting in Newtown, Conn. By the time CNN had identified Ryan Lanza with a picture culled from Facebook at 2:17 p.m., the suspect seemed all but confirmed.

Everyone was wrong.

One clue was that initial reports put the shooter's age at just 20.

And soon afterward, Ryan Lanza’s Facebook page started updating, despite reports from police that the shooter had died at the scene, and a Twitter profile under the name of Andrew Fletcher posted a screenshot at around 2:40 p.m. showing a few status updates from Ray Lanza’s page.

“Everyone shut the f*** up it wasn’t me” one status update read.

“I’m on the bus home now it wasn’t me” said a second.

“IT WASN’T ME I WAS AT WORK IT WASN’T ME” read a third. The tweet has since been deleted.

Another profile under the name Matt Bors posted a similar update, saying “I’m FB friends with the profile being sent around. This is a real screen grab.”

It’s hard to tell if the screen shots came from the misidentified Ray Lanza’s actual Facebook page or one of the dozens of Ryan Lanza community pages that have popped up, mostly in derision. By 3:32 p.m., the original Facebook page had been deleted.

Former Jersey Journal staff writer Brett Wilshe told the Star Ledger that he had spoken with Ryan Lanza at 3:20 p.m. and said that the shooter may have been misidentified.

Some media outlets were reporting that Ryan Lanza had a brother, Adam.

If he was the shooter, that could explain why the initial reports of the shooter’s age put him at 20 — Adam’s age.

The brother's mother Nancy, 52, was found dead in their Newtown, Conn. residence. She was a teacher at the elementary school where the shooting occurred.

Authorities finally confirmed that Adam Lanza was the shooter and his body was found inside Sandy Hook Elementary School. Ryan Lanza was being questioned by police on Friday night.
