Congress Reveals Lawmakers' Personal Mortgages

Friday, 15 June 2012 11:53 AM EDT

A change in ethics laws has forced members of Congress to reveal mortgage information on their financial disclosure forms. The change was part of an ethics law that applied insider trading rules to the members and staff, The Washington Post reported.

The new filings reveal that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., owes between $100,000 and $250,000 on his home and Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., owes more than $500,000 on a pair of mortgages for homes in Arizona and Arlington, the Post reported.

Reid has assets totaling at least $2.8 million. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is worth at least $9.7 million House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, is worth about $1.8 million. One of the contenders for the GOP vice presidential slot, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., disclosed a minimum of $550,000 in debt from loans and mortgages, according to the Post.

The senator still has at least $100,000 of debt from student loans he took out in the 1990s to pay for his undergraduate education at the University of Florida and his law degree at the University of Miami, the Post reported.
