Coach K Mum, but Rasheed Sulaimon Sex Abuse Claims Known by Duke for a Year?

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski was mum when asked on Monday if the athletic department knew for a year about sex abuse complaints against former star player Rasheed Sulaimon, according to the Raleigh News & Observer.

Krzyzewski kicked Sulaimon off Duke's nationally-ranked basketball team on Jan. 29, the first player he has kicked off the team during a season in his 35 years at the school.

"It is a privilege to represent Duke University and with that privilege comes the responsibility to conduct oneself in a certain manner." Krzyzewski said at the time of the dismissal,  according to WRAL-TV. "After Rasheed repeatedly struggled to meet the necessary obligations, it became apparent that it was time to dismiss him from the program."

The Duke Chronicle, the student newspaper, reported on Monday that two allegations of sexual assault were brought to the attention university's athletic department, Krzyzewski and assistant coaches in March 2014.

During an Atlantic Coast Conference call on Monday, Krzyzewski declined to comment on the school newspaper story, according to the News & Observer.

The newspaper wrote, though, that the students did not file complaints through the Office of Student Conduct or take action through the Durham Police Department.

An "anonymous affiliate" of Duke's basketball program told the student newspaper that no action was taken against the basketball player after allegations were also taken to Mike Cragg, deputy director of athletics and operations; director of basketball operations David Bradley; Kevin White, vice president and director of athletics; and Sue Wasiolek, assistant vice president of student affairs and dean of students.

"Nothing happened after months and months of talking about [the sexual assault allegations]," the anonymous affiliate told the Chronicle. "The university administration knew. Kevin White knew, Mike Cragg knew."

The student newspaper wrote that the investigation picked up steam when a senior, Lincoln Wensley, talked to one of the victims about the alleged attacked and addressed it with Cragg and other members in the basketball office.

The school newspaper said Wensley had worked in the basketball office as a secretary and had worked as an intern in Duke's news and communication's office at the time he talked with the alleged victim. The Chronicle said it was after his conversations with basketball program personnel that Krzyzewski announced Sulaimon's dismissal.
