CNN 'Crossfire' To Return With Newt Gingrich, Stephanie Cutter as Regulars

CNN's "Crossfire," the political debate talk show that pits left wing political commentators versus right political commentators to see whose argument is stronger, will be re-launched this fall.

The show will feature the likes of former House Speaker and Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich joined by conservative political commentator S. E. Cupp on the right, opposite Stephanie Cutter, President Barack Obama's deputy campaign manager for the 2012 reelection campaign, and environmental advocate Van Jones on the left.

Jones was also part of Obama's White House team having been named "green czar" by the president before being forced to resign in 2009 after his signature on a 9/11 truther petition was unearthed, notes the Atlantic Wire.

Prior to being cancelled in 2005, "Crossfire" had aired on CNN since 1982.

The show featured some of the most prominent voices from both sides of the U.S. political spectrum.

On the right there was: Pat Buchanan, the late Robert Novak, John H. Sununu, Mary Matalin and Tucker Carlson among others.

On the left there was: the late Tom Braden, Michael Kinsley, Bob Beckel, James Carville, and the late Geraldine Ferraro, the first female vice presidential candidate.

CNN announced the re-launch of the show in a press release on Wednesday.

"Few programs in the history of CNN have had the kind of impact on political discourse that Crossfire did — it was a terrific program then, and we believe the time is right to bring it back and do it again," CNN president Jeff Zucker said in the release.

"Crossfire" is one of several new live shows being introduced by CNN to shake things up since the start of the year.

"Following the successful launches of Around the World, The Lead with Jake Tapper, and New Day, we felt it was the right time to turn our attention next to Crossfire," Ken Jautz, Executive Vice President of CNN, added in the press release. "This will be the next step in reinvigorating our lineup of live programs."

Since Zucker's arrival earlier this year, the network has been shaken up with younger, more physically attractive correspondents being brought on board as long-time veteran journalists at CNN have been pushed out by the new president.

Zucker's programming changes have apparently worked, as the network has seen a ratings boom, with daytime viewership in May up 61 percent and primetime viewership up 70 percent from the same time period last year.
