The Citadel has suspended at least eight cadets after viral images surfaced showing them with pillowcases over their heads, reminiscent of KKK hoods, singing as part of a Christmas skit.

"A social media posting, which I find offensive and disturbing, was brought to my attention this morning. It shows an upper class cadet in front of seven cadets with pillowcases over their heads," Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa, USAF (Ret.) and president of the elite military college in Charleston, South Carolina, posted online. "Preliminary reports claim the cadets were singing Christmas carols as part of a 'Ghosts of Christmas Past' skit. These images are not consistent with our core values of honor, duty and respect."

As the photos made rounds on the Internet, many went online to express their outrage.

This is not the first time the prestigious university has come under fire for an apparently racist incident. Last year, after Charleston County Councilman Henry Darby asked that the Confederate Naval Jack flag be taken out of a campus chapel, he received hundreds of phone calls and emails — some from people claiming to be graduates — that included racial slurs, The Post and Courier reported.

In 1986, students allegedly donned white sheets and wrapped themselves up and entered the room of an African-American student, leaving a burned paper cross there, The Washington Post reported at the time.
