A Cirque du Soleil accident killed an equipment operator who was struck by a lift on the set of the “Luzia” show in San Francisco on Tuesday night.

“It is with immense sadness that we report a fatal accident that occurred on November 29 during the pre-set of the show 'Luzia' in San Francisco,” Cirque du Soleil officials said in a statement, per San Francisco Gate. “One of our employees, a technician on the show, was struck by a lift and passed away from his injuries.”

“We cannot confirm our employee’s identity at this time as his family has yet to be reached,” the statement continued. “We are currently gathering more information about this tragic accident and will update you with more details as soon as we are in a position to do so.”

Following the accident firefighters were on the scene to investigate, KTVU San Francisco reported.

The technician was taken to the hospital with “life-threatening injuries” and died shortly after.

Police said the show was canceled following the accident and show officials handed out fliers with an apology for the cancellation, according to the SF Gate.

“Due to circumstances beyond our control we have unfortunately been forced to cancel the show scheduled for today,” the fliers read. “We ask that you accept our sincere apologies. We understand the inconvenience that this has caused and we would like to do all we can to allow you to enjoy the complete performance of "Luzia" on another date.”

This isn’t the first time safety has been an issue for Cirque du Soleil, according to CNN.

In 2013, Cirque du Soleil performer Sarah Guillot-Guyard fell nearly 100 feet to the floor “after the wire rope from which she was suspended broke,” CNN noted.

The aerialist died in front of the audience at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino.

Earlier this week, a former Olympic gymnast fell face first during a performance with the company in Brisbane, according to 7 News, a CNN affiliate in Australia.

She suffered a neck fracture and a broken arm after the 16-foot fall.
