Visitor Dan Mosqueda of Colorado Springs, Colo., told the newspaper that the aerialist was being hoisted up the side of the stage when she slipped free of her safety wire and plummeted to an open pit.

However, Variety reported that Sarah Guyard-Guillot did not slip out of her safety harness, according to a spokesman for the company.

“At this point in time, I can’t confirm exactly what happened. But I can confirm that she did not slip out of her harness,” Cirque spokesperson Renee-Claude Menard was quoted by Variety about the accident that claimed the life of veteran aerialist's life.

Cirque officials issued a statement saying they were "deeply saddened" by the death and that performances of "Ka" have been canceled until further notice.
