Christy Walton, daughter-in-law of Walmart founder Sam Walton, is the richest woman in the world, Forbes unveiled this week with its annual Forbes 500 list.

With a net worth of $41.7 billion, Walton trails only seven other individuals for world's richest person, including Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Mexican telecom mogul Carlos Slim Helu, Wall St. guru Warren Buffett, Zara's Amancio Ortega, Oracle's Larry Ellison, as well as Charles and David Koch of Koch Industries.

Walton's husband, John, was one of Sam Walton's four children. John died in a private plane crash in 2005, leaving his company stake to his wife. Christy's sister-in-law, Alice Walton, is the second wealthiest woman in the world.

Forbes declared that it was an especially good year for billionaires, who bested last year's collective net worth of $6.4 trillion with a triumphant $7.05 trillion.

There were 290 new billionaires minted this year, including Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp, who own on-demand car service Uber. In total, the world currently has 1,826 billionaires.
