Christian Bale Won't Star as Batman in 'Justice League' Film, or Ever

Christian Bale on Tuesday confirmed what many have feared, saying he’s not playing the role of Batman in the upcoming "Justice League" movie, nor is he going to play the role in any sequels to the "Dark Knight" trilogy.

“We were incredibly fortunate to get to make three (Batman films). That’s enough. Let’s not get greedy,” Bale told Entertainment Weekly. “Chris always said he wanted to make it one film at a time. And we ended up sitting there looking at each other, saying ‘we’re about to make the third.’ We never really knew if we were going to get to be there, but if that was how it was going to be, this was where it should end as well.”

Twitter was abuzz with Tuesday’s news.

“*Drops to knees sobbing* Noooooo! He's my favourite Batman.....,” tweeted @DarkRetro.

“uhm if you don't like Christian Bale, We. Are. Not. Friends. Period,” tweeted @imallgouda.

Nolan’s "Dark Knight" trilogy began with the release of "Batman Begins" in 2005. It was followed by "The Dark Knight" in 2008 and "The Dark Knight Rises" in 2012. The latter two flicks earned in excess of $1 billion each.

Bale told Entertainment Weekly that he is in the dark about plans for the "Justice League" flick.

“I understand that they may be making a Justice League movie, that’s it,” he said.

Alas, he is certain that in time someone else will star as Batman. And Bale says he is looking forward to watching how the character will be portrayed.

“It’s a torch that should be handed from one actor to another,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “So I enjoy looking forward to what somebody else will come up with.”

Bale has spoken about the Dark Knight’s demise in the past, though with a different twist. When rumors were swirling that Batman would be 86ed at the end of "The Dark Night Rises," Bale told MTV News that might be the most fitting finale.

“Not from an acting point of view,” he said if Bruce Wayne should die. “Not from any desire to never have to act again. I've enjoyed immensely playing the role.”
