Chris Soules, former star on "The Bachelor," appeared in an Iowa court on Thursday related to charges that he illegally left the scene of a fatal accident.

Soules is charged with a Class D felony in the incident and could face up to five years in prison if convicted, The Des Moines Register reported. He is accused of leaving the scene of an accident near Aurora, Iowa, on April 24 that left farmer Kenneth E. Mosher, 66, dead. Soules pleaded not guilty in May.

Soules didn't speak during the five-minute hearing.

"We needed the state to clarify how they were going to prosecute Chris for leaving the scene," said Brandon Brown, one of Soules' lawyers, according to the Register. "We have a motion to dismiss forthcoming."

Court documents state Soules had alcoholic beverages or containers in his possession at the time of the incident, but he wasn't charged with driving under the influence, People magazine reported.

Soules identified himself in a call to 911 and attempted to give first aid to the victim, People said. The Iowa State Police Patrol claim he fled the scene was later found at a home.

"Mr. Soules would not come out of the home. It took hours to get a search warrant to retrieve Mr. Soules from inside of that house in order to continue the investigation. That took hours," the state prosecutor said in court, according to People. "At no point did Mr. Soules come out of the house, or cooperate with law enforcement at any point in trying to get in contact with him regarding this individual and the [fatal] accident."

Soules' attorneys said he satisfied the law when he called 911 and identified himself, the Register reported.

A hearing for a motion to dismiss is set for Oct. 10, and a jury trial is set for January, KWWL-TV reported.
