Chris Hyndman, cohost of the popular CBC-TV lifestyle show "Steven and Chris," was found dead Monday near an intersection in Toronto, but authorities have yet to reveal a cause of death.

CBC News reported that Hyndman, 49, had no vital signs when he was located near the intersection of Queen Street and Broadview Avenue on the city's east side around 11 p.m.

"Out of privacy the Toronto police will not discuss any matter unless there's a criminal element pertaining to a specific person," Toronto police Constable Caroline de Kloet told CBC News on Tuesday.

Detective Terry Wray added that the investigation was "completely open" but did not go into detail.

Hyndman had appeared with his husband Steven Sabados on the afternoon "Steven and Chris" show since 2009, according to The Hollywood Reporter. They first met in 1992.

Rebecca Tucker, of the National Post, wrote that "Steven and Chris" was CBC's first daytime talk show hosted by a same-sex couple.

The couple founded The Sabados Group, a design company, and hosted "Designer Guys" on HGTV in 2001. They also appeared together on two other HGTV shows, "Design Rivals" and "So Chic with Steven and Chris," according to The Reporter.

On "Steven and Chris," Hyndman regularly took on the jokester role against Sabados' straight-laced demeanor.

"I think about the loss for Steven, that his partner for 25 years is gone and that our friend is gone," Jennifer Dettman, CBC's executive director of studio and unscripted programming, told CBC News. "And certainly for the CBC, he will leave a hole. He really touched so many Canadians across this country. We saw the emails day in and day out of what he meant to them."

HGTV hosts Jonathan and Drew Scott, of "Property Brothers," commented on Twitter about Hyndman's death.
