Chris Daughtry apologized on YouTube Saturday for saying he was "off the clock" when asked to sing a patriotic song in honor of D-Day at "Fox and Friends'" recent All-American Summer Concert Series.

"Everyone has a moment in their life that they regret very deeply, and this is at the top of my list," Daughtry said in the video, The Hollywood Reporter re-counted. "It hurts my heart to know that I have disrespected the men and women fighting every day. I apologize for offending any of our troops, any of the men and women who have served past or present. I'm sorry."

After his scheduled performance on Friday, the "American Idol" alum was hanging out on stage in front of a live crowd with a few of the "Fox and Friends" hosts when one of them, Steve Doocy, asked, "Since today is D-Day, plus, 70, what patriotic song could we all sing?"

"I’m off the clock. I’m going to watch y’all," said Daughtry after a moment of awkward silence.

Mediaite.com captured a clip of the concert, and it's clear the singer was caught off-guard by the request, something Daughtry mentions himself in the apology video.

The hosts, which included Anna Kooiman, Clayton Morris, and Heather Childers, then decided on "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" as Daughtry slowly backed off stage, attempting a joke in the process. He forced a laugh, telling the hosts they'd "opened a can of worms — this is where I bail."

Kooiman then climbed down into the crowd, asking a little girl to lead the crowd in a sing-along. She obliged, and the crowd joined in.

Daughtry received a lot of flack on Twitter after the segment aired.

"I was thrown off," Daughtry explained in his apology video. "I panicked . . . Poor choice of words, terrible judgment on my part . . . I wish that I could have pulled it together."
