Chris Christie is the nation's most unpopular governor, according to the new Morning Consult Governor Approval rankings released Tuesday.

The Morning Consult, a polling and marketing research company, questioned 85,000 registered voters nationwide from January to March on their opinion of their governor's job performance. The poll found that only 25 percent of New Jersey residents approve of Christie's performance as governor.

Voters continued to penalize Christie for the "Bridge-gate" scandal and his support for President Donald Trump, whom he endorsed after dropping out of the presidential race last year.

Christie aides Bill Baroni and Bridget Anne Kelly were sentenced in federal court last month for the 2013 toll lane shutdowns of the George Washington Bridge, which was allegedly orchestrated as political retribution after Fort Lee mayor Mark Sokolich declined to endorse Christie for re-election, NJ.com reported.

Christie has repeatedly denied any involvement in "Bridge-gate" and never faced any charges in the scandal.

Sam Brownback, the Republican governor of Kansas, trailed Christie as the No. 2 most unpopular governor with a 66 percent disapproval rating, according to the poll. He continues to be haunted by budget shortfalls and spending cuts after instituting a "trickle-down" economic approach that included income tax exemptions for business owners and tax rate reductions for individuals, according to the Topeka Capital-Journal.

On the flipside, Republican governors serving in majority blue states earned the survey's top rankings. Charlie Baker, of Massachusetts, topped the most popular list with a 75 percent approval rating, while 73 percent of Maryland voters believe Gov. Larry Hogan has done his job, according to the Morning Consult rankings.

In fact, the top 10 most popular governors in the country are all Republicans:

  1. Charlie Baker (R-MA)
  2. Larry Hogan (R-MD)
  3. Doug Burgum (R-ND)
  4. Phil Scott (R-VT)
  5. Dennis Daugaard (R-SD)
  6. Asa Hutchinson (R-AR)
  7. Greg Abbott (R-TX)
  8. Bill Haslam (R-TN)
  9. Brian Sandoval (R-NV)
  10. Gary Herbert (R-UT)

New York's Andrew Cuomo finished as the most popular Democratic governor, coming in 12th place with a 62 percent approval rating.

Connecticut's leader Dan Malloy ranked as the most unpopular Democratic governor with a 29 percent approval rating in the Morning Consult poll.
