Chris Berman and his family are “overwhelmed” by the amount of support they’ve received since the tragic passing of Berman’s wife, Katherine, who was killed in a car crash in Connecticut on Tuesday.

Katherine Berman, 67, and 87-year-old Edward Bertulis collided in a rural area in Woodbury, Connecticut – a collision that left them both dead, said Sporting News.

The legendary ESPN sportscaster was at Citi Field in Queens, New York, watching the New York Mets host the San Francisco Giants when he learned of his wife’s death just a few hours after the fatal accident, said the Daily Mail.

Berman, a longtime ESPN broadcaster, and his children spoke out for the first time late Wednesday, via ESPN.

“We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and sympathy from so many folks we know, and so many others we look forward to knowing,” their statement said. “Kathy Berman had a huge heart, and this would have warmed hers beyond belief. It certainly warmed ours. All of us need to keep the family of Edward Bertulis in our thoughts and prayers as well.”

Berman turned 62 on Wednesday. The two had been married for more than 33 years.

ESPN president John Skipper issued a statement on Wednesday as well, offering his condolences to the Berman family.

“This is a devastating tragedy and difficult to comprehend. Chris is beloved by all his ESPN colleagues and for good reason: he has a huge heart and has given so much to so many over the years,” Skipper said, via ESPN. “We know how much his family means to him and all we can do at a moment like this is give him the love and support he will surely need at this hour. Our thoughts and prayers are with Chris, Meredith, Doug and the entire family.”

Berman joined the ESPN family back in 1979 and recently signed a new deal with the network after stepping away from ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown after hosting the show for 31 seasons.
