Children Hurt: Cannon Mishap During Civil War Re-Enactment Burns Kids

Up to four children were hurt when a cannon spark set a pouch of gunpowder on fire at a Civil War re-enactment parade in Orem, Utah, on Saturday.

"It fired normally the first time," Wayne Latu, a witness to the incident, told KSL Broadcasting Salt Lake City. "And then there was a second explosion, and a fireball that you saw that came out of the smoke."

Police told reporters that the children were treated at the scene and transported to the hospital in stable condition. They were around age 10 and one of them had burns on the face.

A spark from the cannon's first blast is said to have landed in a gunpowder pouch that contained charges for the cannon. The pouch exploded, and injured the children.

"There were kids lying on the ground," said Latu. "One girl was hopping on one foot, and there was overall shock."

CBS affiliate KUTV 2 reported that, "Witnesses who saw the explosion told 2News that two of the three children appeared to be engulfed in flames."

Witness Brittany Tait said, "When the flames went up in the air these three children started crying. One little girl's clothes were on fire, we're told. People were running with water to douse her."

Corina Johnson, a spectator and registered nurse, was one of the first responders on the scene, and told Fox 13 Salt Lake City that four children, not three, were hurt in the explosion. She said it was one girl and three boys, all between the ages of 10 and 12.

"Originally there was just a bunch of smoke, and we saw a kid duck out from underneath and then we saw three different kids on fire," said Johnson. "There were people yelling to stop, drop and roll, water bottles flying so they could get some things going, me and another nurse were sitting on the side and ran over to kind of help, I didn’t stay for a long time, doused all the kids in water, got their clothes, pulled off as much as possible and got EMT headed this way."

One news station obtained spectator footage of the explosion, and released a picture of it on Twitter before their report Saturday night.
