This weekend in Chicago, shootings killed five people and wounded 32, double the number shot on the same weekend last year when 18 people were shot, with one of those killed, but fewer than the more than 50 people shot during each of the last two weekends.

The shootings came as federal, state, county and city police agencies conducted “targeted enforcement missions” on the city’s South and West sides, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Chicago has had more than 675 homicides so far this year, putting the city on pace to have its highest number homicides since 1998, according to Tribune data. Homicides are up 54 percent in the city this year, and shootings are up 46 percent.

The enforcement missions were concentrated in three districts: South Side’s Gresham District and the Ogden and Austin districts on the West Side.

“We just want to send a clear message to the people perpetrating this gun violence in our communities that we just simply won’t tolerate it,” police superintendent Eddie Johnson said at a news conference Friday night, the Tribune reported.

The enforcement missions were for the purpose of targeting drug sales and gang violence in the parts of the city where they exist in highest concentrations, NBC5 Chicago reported.

The shootings took place between 10 p.m. Friday and 10 p.m. Sunday, according to the Tribune. Nearly all of the fatal shootings that happened this weekend took place at night while it was dark.
