Chicago coyotes infected with sarcoptic mange look like "zombie dogs" and police are warning residents to keep their distance after several sightings in Cook County.

Officials warned they aren’t lost pets but coyotes, Fox News reported.

The Hanover Park Police Department cautioned the public to not to approach the coyotes after several concerned citizens reported what appeared to be malnourished and neglected stray dogs in their neighborhoods.

“There is unfortunately an increase in sarcoptic mange in the urban coyote populations which has caused these normally nocturnal animals to become more active during the day,” the Hanover Park Police Department said.

The skin disease leads to animals suffering hair loss and secondary infections that can cause these coyotes to resemble some sort of “zombie dog.”

“The infections affect the animals’ vision, causing them to look for food during the daylight hours,” police said, adding that although the coyotes were not usually aggressive, they should be avoided at all times.

The Cook County Urban Coyote Research Project noted that, in urban areas, coyotes were likely serve to serve as the host for the pathogen.

This could ultimately spread to pets, and in rare cases to humans, through direct exposure to the infected animal.

The project reported there has not been a single coyote bite or attack reported on humans in northeastern Illinois

“While animals with mange are difficult to witness given their poor state, animals can recover from the disease,” the Coyote Project said. “It is best to leave the animals as they are, offering support by feeding infected individuals will only create more issues for those animals.”
