The principal and the athletic director involved in the East High School “forced splits” scandal have retired and resigned, respectively, CBS Denver reported. The cheerleading coach went soon after videos of sobbing girls started surfacing more than a month ago.

The news comes after a month-long, widely documented investigation into “forced splits” at East High School. As per the CBS report, the investigation resulted in attorneys determining that the school officials did not do enough to protect the cheerleaders from physical and emotional harm.

In a public letter on the school’s website, Denver Public Schools’ Superintendent Tom Boasberg spoke of the results of the investigation:

“East High school Principal Andy Mendelsberg and Athletic Director Lisa Porter did not take sufficient steps to ensure that the physical and emotional safety and well-being on the East high schools cheer team were fully protected,” Boasberg said, per CBS Denver.

Following the findings, Mendelsberg announced in a public letter that he was retiring from his role as principal. Mendelsberg reportedly hid knowledge of the cellphone videos, and was said to downplay the cheerleading coach’s abuse, a 9News report said.

As per the New York Daily News, cheerleading coach Ozell Williams was dismissed from his role after the “forced splits” videos were released. Following this incident, parents of the girls involved sent numerous complaints and queries to Athletic Director Lisa Porter, but all went unanswered and unacknowledged. Many parents believed that Porter should have been more aware of the coach’s methods and history.

Porter resigned from her role as athletic director following the investigative reports, but has yet to release a statement.
