Cheerios sparked backlash when it featured an interracial family in one of its commercials last year, and General Mills announced it will use the same family in this year's Super Bowl ad.
The "Just Checking" commercial, featuring a girl with a black father and white mother, made headlines, eventually forcing General Mills to shut down the commercial's comment section on YouTube, according to AdWeek.
The commercial garnered millions of views.

In the newest commercial, which will be featured during the Super Bowl, the father uses Cheerios to tell "Gracie" that her mother is pregnant with her soon-to-be brother. Gracie negotiates a puppy into the mix, at the surprise of her mother.
"It's pure Cheerios — a quiet, simple, real moment, and one ends nicely, too, with a priceless look on the mom's face," AdWeek reported. "It's hard to imagine Cheerios handling a sequel any more deftly than this. It obliquely references the earlier controversy, but by embracing a simpler story that has nothing to do with it, it suggests the controversy was dumb to begin with — that this is just America now, and families like this are just like everyone else, with better things to worry about."
Many of the latest comments on Twitter, though, are supportive of Cheerios' new commercial.
The commercial is General Mills' first Super Bowl game ad since it paid for a Wheaties ad in 1996.
