A cell phone-looking gun that James Bond would be proud to conceal is being designed by a Minnesota-based company and is expected to be for sale for $395 by October, the company's owner told KARE-TV.

The weapon, called the Ideal Conceal, was created so it wouldn't draw the attention other guns do when someone wants to be armed, the company's chief executive officer Kirk Kjellberg told the television station.

The pistol is a high-velocity .380-caliber double-barreled derringer with "great stopping power," according to the Ideal Conceal website that shows the design of a gun that is as thin as a cellphone and can fit in a person's back pocket.

"I walked towards the restroom and a little child, a boy about 7, saw me and said, 'Mommy, mommy, that guy's gotta gun,'" Kjellberg said about getting the idea for the gun while he was sitting at a restaurant. "The whole restaurant of course turns and stares at you and I thought, 'There's just gotta be something better to do than this.'"

"In today's day and age, carrying a concealed pistol has become a necessity," says the company. "But what if you didn't have to conceal? That's where Ideal Conceal comes in. Smartphones are everywhere, so your new pistol will easily blend in with today's environment. In its locked position it will be virtually undetectable because it hides in plain sight."

The Firearms Blog wrote about the weapon in early March, calling the design "novel," but said it appeared to have limitations.

"… I can only feasibly see this being used in a very narrow range of circumstances," said the blogger. "But, if those narrow circumstances require something like this, then the concept will have succeeded. Of course, this is dependent on the concept getting off the ground and into initial testing and production."

Kjellberg said while he has heard concerns about the gun being indistinguishable from a cell phone, he told KARE-TV that it was being designed for people who want to carry a weapon but "not have to engage other people about why they're carrying that gun."

"We don't want anything sinister to go on with it either," Kjellbergsaid. "It's just made for mainstream America, not criminal enterprise."

Kjellberg told NBC News he plans to give x-rays of the gun to the Department of Homeland Security so law enforcement can distinguish it from cellphones during airport screenings.
