Celebrities need to be careful about posting photos of their babies to social media showing the infants sleeping in unsafe position that can lead to SIDS, a British charity has warned.

Kim Kardashian has been known to post photos of her babies wrapped up in blankets, sleeping in their cribs, while Hillary Duff has shared an image of her daughter fast asleep with a hat, The Daily Mail noted.

The photos seem innocent but The Lullaby Trust has raised concerns that some of these sleeping positions could increase the risk of sudden unexpected infant deaths.

"In the age of social media, celebrities have more influence than ever over parents and consumers," said Jenny Ward, acting chief executive of The Lullaby Trust, in a statement. "When it comes to sharing images of their babies, it is important for them to keep in mind that their photos might be unintentionally promoting unsafe practices or products."

According to recent statistics by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 3,600 sudden unexpected infant deaths reported in the U.S. for 2017.

These deaths, which occur among babies younger than a year, have no immediate obvious cause. There are three commonly reported types of unexpected deaths which include sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), unknown causes and accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed.

There has been an uptick in reported cases of accidental infant suffocation and strangulation in bed and experts are worried about the role celebrity parents are playing in this.

"It is vitally important that parents are aware of advice on how to sleep their baby safely, if all parents had access to this information many lives could be saved," The Lullaby Trust said. "However, images depicting celebrities sleeping their babies unsafely give mixed messages to parents and make this task much more difficult."

The charity has offered parents the following tips:

  1. Always place babies on their back to sleep
  2. Keep the crib clear of pillows, cot bumpers, or any loose, excessive or bulky bedding
  3. Place baby to sleep in a separate crib or Moses basket in the same room as you for the first six months
  4. Use a firm, flat, waterproof mattress in good condition
  5. Keep baby smoke free during pregnancy and after birth
  6. Never cover baby’s head or face while sleeping
  7. Do not co-sleep if you smoke, have drunk alcohol, or taken medication that may make you less aware or if your baby was premature or of low birth weight
