Cat Food Recall by Diamond Pet Foods, Citing Low Vitamin B1 Levels

By    |   Thursday, 14 March 2013 01:35 PM EDT

Diamond Pet Foods recalled cat food in 25 states on Sunday, after tests indicated the products might have a low level of thiamine, or Vitamin B1.

The voluntary recall applies to some of the company's dry cat food, including bags of Premium Edge Finicky Adult Cat Formula, Premium Edge Senior Cat Hairball Management Formula, Premium Edge Kitten Formula, Diamond Naturals Kitten Formula, and 4health All Life Stages Cat Formula.

"At Diamond Pet Foods, we have a process where we continuously test our products, and this process allowed us to find the undesired levels of thiamine in some of our cat formulas. Our food safety protocols are designed to provide safe food on a daily basis," Michele Evans, Diamond Pet Foods executive director of food safety and quality Assurance, said in a press release. "In the event an error occurs, we have the data to quickly alert pet owners, giving them the confidence they demand of a pet food manufacturer."

Thiamine is essential for cats in maintaining normal nervous system function. Thiamine deficiency can cause a decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting, and weight loss. In advanced cases, symptoms can include ventriflexion (bending towards the floor) of the neck, wobbly walking, falling, circling, and seizures.

The products were distributed in 25 states, including Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Pet owners who aren't sure if they've purchased a bag included in the recall, or who want a refund or replacement product, can call a hotline setup by Diamond Pet Foods.
