Mark Hamill and the late Carrie Fisher were two of the people honored as Disney Legends at an awards ceremony on Friday.
Hamill got teary-eyed during the tribute to Fisher, who died last year of a heart attack. When he accepted his award, he said Fisher was like a sister to him in real life as well as on screen.
“I would love to give my deepest respect to the super cool space sis I have in Carrie Frances Fisher,” Hamill said to cheers from the crowd, the OC Register reported. “We were like siblings — the good and the bad. There was a comfort with her. We can rely on one another. And there was a deep respect.”
“I really wish she were here,” Hamill said, Rolling Stone reported. “But, she would also want us to be having a good time and not be sad.”
Billie Lourd, Fisher’s daughter, wrote a statement read by Disney CEO Bob Iger during the ceremony, which talked about going to Disney World with her mom.
“Becoming part of the Disney family was truly an amazing moment for her,” Lourd wrote, according to Rolling Stone. “She secretly always wanted to be a Disney princess and a Disney Legend would have been her ultimate dream.”
Eleven people in all received the Disney Legends awards at the D23 Expo in Anaheim. Others honored included Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, director Gary Marshall, and a surprise award to Whoopi Goldberg, and Oprah, whose "Oprah Winfrey Show" aired on Disney-owned ABC for many years and who stars in the upcoming Disney film adaptation of “A Wrinkle in Time.”
Fans applauded the awards and offered congratulations.
