Carolina Herrera has announced that she will step down as creative director of her brand after her final show on Monday, appointing Wes Gordon to take her place while she becomes the global brand ambassador for the label.

The 79-year-old has led her fashion house for the last 37 years and says she is not retiring, but “moving forward” in her new role, The New York Times reported. Herrera has become synonymous with elegance and classic style rather than trendy fashions, a focus she says Gordon shares with her and which is all too rare in fashion today.

Herrera says she will no longer be designing for the brand, but will spend her time marketing the line globally and with her husband, 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, The New York Times reported.

“Fashion has changed a lot,” Herrera told The New York Times. “What they like now is ugliness. Women dress in a very strange way. Like clowns. There is a lot of pressure to change all the time. But it’s better to wear what suits you. Add something new and you have a great look. Consistency is important.”

This way of thinking has led Herrera to $1.4 billion in annual sales and devoted fans like Renee Zellweger, Caroline Kennedy, and former first lady Michelle Obama, The New York Times reported.

Herrera’s successor Gordon has only been working with her line as a creative consultant for 11 months, Harper’s Bazaar reported, but he introduced his own brand in 2009 and was a finalist for the Vogue/CFDA Fashion Fund twice.

Herrera said that she alone chose Gordon to succeed her, The New York Times reported. “He’s the right one for this position to further build on our great momentum,” she said in a statement from the brand, Harper’s Bazaar reported.
