A car hit a crowd of pedestrians after a NASCAR race at the Martinsville Speedway in Virginia on Sunday, injuring 22 with nine transported to two hospitals.
The incident came after the Goody's Fast Relief 500 Sprint Cup Series race that was won by Jimmie Johnson, NASCAR.com reported.
The driver of a Chevrolet SSR convertible in the handicapped parking area outside Turn 2 attempted to pass a Jeep while waiting in post-race traffic, and ended up striking a crowd of pedestrians, Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corrine Geller said, according to USA Today.
Geller said alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the crash, and the driver was interviewed by state police Sunday evening.
Motorsport.com reported that the victims range in age from 13 to 65. The website said that 13 of them were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Bystanders said the accident occurred about 30 minutes after the race as traffic was leaving the speedway.
"He didn't know where he was or what he did," witness Roger Wolfe told USA Today, adding that it appeared the driver of the vehicle that caused the accident was "out of it." "You could hear the screams for help. They must have had 15, 20 police cars and ambulances down there. The guy who got ran over had a sheet up to his neck. I figured he was pretty bad off."
NASCAR Driver Denny Hamlin, witnesses and others took to social media to pass along words of support and shock about the incident.
