The jolly icon of Cap’n Crunch cereal fame may be, in fact, an imposter. Detailed research into Navy uniforms finds that the captain’s uniform pictured on the box is actually that of a commander.
A Naval captain generally has four stripes on his or her sleeve, but Cap’n Crunch wears only three. While this may not change the sugary taste of the cereal, the
idea that the captain may have been living a lie is drawing interest across the Internet.

With social media taking the captain to task, led by a
FoodBeast blogger who outed him in the first place, Cap’n Horatio Magellan Crunch took to the Twitter waves and disputed the claim he hasn’t been honest. He is captain of a sailing vessel, which makes him an official captain, the cereal icon claimed.
But Cap’n Crunch didn’t stop the rumors before good puns and fun was had by all. The Washington Times headlined its story, “
Cereal fibber? Cap’n Crunch Fights Charges He’s Really a Commander.”
Cap'n Crunch has been around since 1963 and is manufactured by Quaker Oats Co., a division of PepsiCo.
