Capital of Nevada Flub Fuels Fire Against Miss USA, a Former Miss Nevada

Nia Sanchez, the Nevada woman who took home the Miss USA crown last week, had trouble remembering the the capital of her home state during a recent radio talk show interview.

Sanchez, who made the embarrassing slip-up Monday on WPLC-FM's "The Todd Show," tried to laugh her way through the mental block when she was asked what the capital of Nevada is.

"Oh, um, ah, oh my gosh," she said, snapping her fingers trying to remember the answer before someone off-camera bailed her out with the answer "Carson City."

"Thank you, I was going to say that," Sanchez said laughing. "I was like, that one DJ host on MTV, back in the day, his name, that's how I always remembered it. Carson Daly. That guy."

The mistake is sure to add fuel to the controversy surrounding Sanchez and her residency. A source told Fox News that Sanchez, 24, lost the Miss California title three times before switching over to compete for Nevada. The source accused her of setting up a "paper trail" residency in the state, allowing her to compete there while continuing to live in California.

"[Las Vegas] is my home," Sanchez told Fox 411 last week, defending her right to compete for Miss Nevada. "I have a house there with a friend. I actually had an agent that was working me in Nevada a lot so I figured why not work in that state, and then I looked into the pageant program because I had done pageants before."

"So I figured why not look into the one in Nevada? I really liked the way that it was run, the director that ran it, it seemed like a really healthy, well-run state program. So I decided to go there since I was living there anyway," she continued.

TMZ.com said that Monday's state capital flub, though, will only embolden her critics.

"Sanchez completely whiffed when asked about the capital of Nevada . . . and possibly also insulted Carson Daly," the celebrity website wrote. "Neither is cool."
