Canada looks set to approve the legalization of marijuana throughout the country with a senate vote this week. If it succeeds, Canada will be the first G7 nation — those comprising seven of the world’s largest economies — to do so.

The Canadian Senate is scheduled to vote on bill C-45 Thursday, a version of which was previously approved by the House of Commons. It would legalize the sale, purchase, and use of marijuana by any person age 18 and above.

If approved, the government may begin sales in as little as 10 to 12 weeks, USA Today reported.

Canada and a number of the G7 countries have legalized marijuana for medical use, as have a number of U.S. states. Fewer U.S. states have legalized the drug for recreational use.

Deloitte, a financial services company, estimates that assuming the measure is approved, the drug would become a $6 billion industry.

“We’ve very much learned from the early mistakes made by some U.S. states and other jurisdictions,” said bill sponsor Sen. Tony Dean, an independent, according to USA Today. “We know have a national challenge with cannabis. We have some of the highest youth consumption rates in the world, an illegal cannabis market worth upward of $6 billion annually, we know it’s harmful for kids, especially younger kids … and we had a government that wanted to tackle those issues.”

Although other countries have decriminalized the drug, Uruguay is the only country to have legalized it nationally.

While marijuana is still illegal at the federal level in the U.S., merchants in states where the sale of marijuana is legal often revert to cash operations to avoid targeting of bank accounts by federal authorities.

CBC News noted Canada's marijuana legalization would open up a market for new products geared toward non-smoking consumers.

Others wondered if that was such a good idea.
