A California shark attack occurred when a great white bit a man who was spearfishing on Friday at Pebble Beach, according to CBS News.

The victim, 25-year-old Grigor Azatian, was with his father, Armen Azatian when they encountered the 15-foot-long shark about several hundred yards offshore.

Armen Azatian said the shark took "two or three" bites out of his son's leg before Grigor Azatian was able to break free and swim to their boat, KSBW-TV reported.

Once back on shore, emergency officials rushed Grigor Azatian to a hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Armen Azatian said his son stayed calm through the ordeal, despite the extensive damage to his leg.

"It was a shock for me," he said, according to The HuffPost. "It was a horrifying situation. My thought was just to try and help him to stop the bleeding."

Doctors said Grigor Azatian should be able to walk again but Armen Azatian told KSBW-TV that there was massive damage to his son's leg and they were looking at a long road to recovery.

Dan Silveira, a local diver at the scene at the time of the attack, noted that members of the rescue team said Grigor Azatian's leg had been "hit really hard," CBS News reported. "I hope he gets to keep his leg. I hope he recovers fully."

Silveira said rescuers think the shark may have been tagged with a locator, which was part of a research project, and he could not understand why the public had not been made aware of this.

"I've spent countless hours out there, and it could have been me," he said, according to CBS News.

Shortly after the attack, the water was evacuated and an air unit was launched to search the area.

According to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, a "large aquatic animal" was spotted off Pescadero Point, which may have been the shark.
