Three California kids were found living in a large box surrounded by trash and no running water in San Bernardino County Wednesday, authorities told KABC-TV.

The parents — Mona Kirk, 51, and Daniel Panico, 73 — were booked into the Morongo Basin Jail on suspicion of willful cruelty to a child after the kids, ages 11, 13, and 14, were found living in a plywood box in Joshua Tree, California. The space is about 20 feet long by four feet high and 10 feet wide, the television station stated.

San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department stated that deputies were sent to location on an area check and found what appeared to be an abandoned trailer and the large box where the children were located.

The children told deputies they had been living there for about four years with no running electricity or water, surrounded by trash, human feces, and about 30 to 40 cats that roamed the area freely, according to a statement from the sheriff's department.

"The victims were found to have an inadequate amount of food and were living in an unsuitable and unsafe environment due to the conditions located on the property," the sheriff’s department said in a statement.

San Bernardino Sheriff Department spokeswoman Cindy Bachman said, according to The New York Times, that investigators found no record of the children attending school there. She said investigators are trying to determine where the family lived before.

Bachman said that while Kirk slept in the box with her children, Panico lived in the trailer or a vehicle at the property, The San Bernardino Sun reported.

Children and Family Services took custody of the children while the parents' bonds was set at $100,000 each, the sheriff's department stated.

The case is reminiscent of another in Perris, California, where 13 children were rescued from a home just south of San Bernardino County. The children claimed that their parents bound them to the furniture and beds while their parents held them captive.

In that case, the parents David Turpin, 56, and Louise Turpin, 49, were each charged with multiple felony counts of torture, child abuse, abuse of dependent adults, and false imprisonment in Riverside County, according to the Los Angeles Times.
