A caffeine dosage alertness algorithm has been calculated by the U.S. Army to determine automatically the optimal amount of caffeine people should have and when they should consume it.

Eighty-three percent of Americans drink coffee, and almost 45 percent drink two to three cups per day, Fast Company reported. It has not been clear, however, what is the exact right amount of coffee people should drink.

Army researchers released the algorithm Monday saying it would “maximize alertness” during normally sleepy conditions, Fast Company reported. There is a high rate of sleep disorders among active duty military personnel, a recent study showed.

The algorithm takes a person’s physiology and caffeine tolerance into account, Science Daily reported. It uses psychomotor vigilance task (PVT) tests to determine how much caffeine people should consume.

“We found that by using our algorithm, which determines when and how much caffeine a subject should consume, we can improve alertness by up to 64 percent,” senior study author Jaques Reifman said, Science Daily reported.

Subjects can alternatively reduce their caffeine consumption by up to 65 percent with the algorithm and still maintain maximum alertness, Science Daily reported.

“Our algorithm is the first quantitative tool that provides automated, customized guidance for safe and effective caffeine dosing to maximize alertness at the most needed times during any sleep-loss condition,” Reifman said, Science Daily reported.

In addition to using the algorithm with soldiers in the Army and possibly other branches of the military, the Army said it may also license the algorithm so that civilians can use it, CNET reported.
