Bush Rodeo Clown Dummy Appeared in 1994, So It's Not Just Obama

By    |   Thursday, 15 August 2013 04:58 PM EDT

A rodeo clown unseated by rousing public opinion after donning a President Obama mask is just following a “rich tradition” of such politics: In 1994, another rodeo clown used a George H.W. Bush-masked dummy in the Philadelphia area.

The Washington Examiner pointed out that Philadelphia Inquirer reporter Douglas Campbell wrote an article highlighting the Bush clown’s performance. With references like “the big white gate flew open,” the article detailed the bull’s charge and attack on the Bush dummy.

“He tore into it, sending the rubber mask flying halfway across the sand as he turned toward the fence, sending cowboys scrambling up the fence rails, hooking one with his horn and tossing him off the fence,” the Examiner quoted from Campbell’s article.

The Examiner’s article was just one of hundreds that popped up after a rodeo clown at the Missouri State Fair stepped in the biggest media cowpile around after wearing an Obama mask. Reactions brought out extreme opinions, from required sensitivity training for rodeo clowns who perform at future Missouri State Fairs to Missouri’s NAACP calling for a probe in the situation and even an invitation for the rodeo clown to perform in Texas, given by Texas Rep. Steve Stockman.

“Liberals want to bronco bust dissent. But Texas values speech, even if it’s speech they don’t agree with,” Stockman wrote in a press release. “Disagreeing with speech is one thing. Banning it and ordering citizens into reeducation classes for mocking a liberal leader is another. Liberals have targeted this man for personal destruction to create a climate of fear.”
