Two Brussels police officers were stabbed Wednesday in what authorities say could be a terrorism-related incident.

A 43-year-old Belgian man, later identified as Hicham D, was detained after one officer shot him in the leg to end the incident, The Guardian reported. Authorities said the man stabbed one officer in the neck and the other in the abdomen before fleeing in the Schaerbeek district.

A second group of officers confronted the suspect and the assailant reportedly broke the nose of one of them. The officer then shot the suspect in the leg, the newspaper reported.

"The provisional results of the investigation indicate that it could be a potential terrorist attack," federal prosecutors said, according to Reuters.

According to media reports, Hicham D was a known figure to Belgian police, BBC News said. It was believed the suspect had jihadists links and had traveled to Syria to fight.

The suspect served in the Belgian army as an officer until 2009, according to the BBC.

Brussels' Gare du Nord railway station was closed for an hour because of a bomb alert earlier in the day. Rail service continued after bomb squad teams checked the area.

The Schaerbeek district became a focus of attention in the city earlier this year when authorities learned suspects connected to a terrorist attack at the Brussels airport March 22 built their bombs in a Schaerbeek flat.

Ibrahim el-Bakraoui and Najim Laachraoui blew themselves up at the Brussels airport, while a third man, Mohamed Abrini, who became known as "the man in the hat," fled the scene after his bomb failed to detonate.

Abrini was eventually captured by police. The bombings, which damaged the main terminal of the international airport, killed 32 people from around the world.
