Brothers Save Sister From Bear Before Park Rangers Kill It (Video)

By    |   Thursday, 20 June 2013 09:02 AM EDT

Two brothers on a family camping trip in Wyoming saved their 7-year-old sister from a bear that wandered into their campground Sunday.

The Kelly family, of Kaysville, Utah, celebrated Father's Day at a campground in New Fork, Wyo., with a big breakfast Sunday, then cleaned up and went to church. When they returned, the family's young children ran ahead of their parents to get back to camp but soon came face-to-face with a bear rummaging through their garbage.

Baden Kelly, 11, said the bear got to be within five feet of him, his 7-year-old sister Moriah, and 15-year-old brother Logan.

"I yelled, 'bear!' and I told Moriah to run, she didn’t, so I grabbed a rock and I threw it at the bear’s head," Baden Kelly told FOX13Now.com. "It didn't do anything, so I ran to Moriah, picked her up and carried her.

"That's when the bear started running after us," he said. "By the time it got to about 10 feet behind us, my brother came running really fast out of his cabin and shouted very loudly."

Kamila Kelly, the children's mother, was walking back to camp with her husband when she heard about the bear.

"We were headed back there when two staffers came running up saying there was a bear in camp, and that we needed to get back to the lodge," she told FOX13Now.com. "And we told them that we had three kids, presumably in the direction they had just came from."

The Kelly kids said the bear chased them for about 30 to 40 feet before another camper chased it away. The animal later charged park rangers who shot it dead.

"I was scared because of Moriah and she's just little, she wouldn't have been able to fight for herself," Baden Kelly said. "So I had to make a choice and do that."

Kamila Kelly called her sons are real heroes.

"I saw the camp staff bringing Moriah up, and she jumped into my arms and said that, 'Logan and Baden saved my life,'" she said.
