A man whose brother died mysteriously when they were toddlers will testify against his mother's ex-boyfriend after seeing a Facebook photo, The Washington Post reported.

For nearly five decades David Dearlove, 71, has maintained that the death of 19-month-old Paul Booth in 1968 occurred when the child fell out of bed and banged his head at their home in Stockton-on-Tees, England.

The emergence in 2015 of a photo on Facebook, showing Dearlove sitting against a brick wall holding Paul Booth, led to the court case, in which 53-year-old Peter Booth claims his brother died after Dearlove smashed his head against a fireplace, the Post reported.

"Dearlove's son David posted an image of his dad with Paul and I got angry," Peter Booth told a jury hearing the case in which Dearlove is charged with murder and child cruelty, according to The Mirror, which referred to Dearlove as the boys' stepdad.

The court heard how Dearlove had a history of violence against the two brothers, which culminated in October 1968.

Describing the scene, Peter Booth told the jury how his brother died.

"He was holding Paul's ankles, he was face-up looking at the ceiling. He swung his head and it hit the fireplace," said Booth, who was almost 4 years old at the time, per the Mirror. "Paul let out a yelp and my mother screamed when she came out of the kitchen. It was a horrible thud as his head hit. Paul was then on the floor with his arms by his side. Because I was really scared I ran upstairs."

This is not the first time that Peter Booth attempted to report the incident.

According to The Telegraph, he first notified police in the early 1990s and again in 2005 but the case was never taken up.

It was only after he told his cousin and she alerted authorities two years ago that an investigation was launched, leading to Dearlove's arrest.
