A lawyer for Britney Spears' father fired back at "questionable" conservatorship claims after two Republican congressmen demanded a hearing on legal conservatorships, including the pop star's, Fox News reported.
Britney Spears' substantial assets have been under her father's control since 2008.
"Jamie Spears has diligently and professionally carried out his duties as one of Britney's conservators, and his love for his daughter and dedication to protecting her is clearly apparent to the court," the father's lawyer, Vivian Thoreen, said in a statement.
She adds: "Any time Britney wants to end her conservatorship, she can ask her lawyer to file a petition to terminate it; she has always had this right but in 13 years has never exercised it. Britney knows that her Daddy loves her, and that he will be there for her whenever and if she needs him, just as he always has been – conservatorship or not."
Reps. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., and Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, issued a letter requesting a hearing to "review and examine the plight of Americans trapped unjustly in conservatorships," and specifically mentioned Britney Spears.
"If the conservatorship process can rip the agency from a woman who was in the prime of her life and one of the most powerful pop stars in the world, imagine what it can do to people who are less powerful and have less of a voice," Gaetz said. "I've heard the story of those people in Florida, and I am concerned about access to due process for wards."
