Britney Spears' parents are locked in a legal battle over her controversial conservatorship, with dad Jamie's team accusing her mother, Lynne, of exploiting the singer's "pain and trauma for personal profit."
Last week, Lynne filed a court document objecting to the four month's fees charged by Holland & Knight, which is the law firm representing Jamie. Part of the firm's "unnecessary" work included a "national media tour" to "combat media coverage that "cast Mr. Spears in a negative light," the filing states, according to People.
In response, Holland & Knight filed its own court documents requesting the court to overrule Lynne's objections.
"Despite having zero involvement in her daughter's conservatorship until very recently, Lynne Spears is asserting claims as if she were a party directly involved in the litigation (which she is not)," the document obtained by People reads.
"While the Conservator and his counsel have been very cautious, limited, and thoughtful in dealing with the media (a far cry from any 'national media tour'), Lynne Spears is the one who exploited her daughter's pain and trauma for personal profit by publishing a book about the Conservatee," the document adds in reference to Lynne's 2008 book "Through the Storm."
Jamie's lawyers further claim that Lynne is not "acting in the best interests" of Britney and has "no knowledge" about the fees related to the case.
"Lynne Spears' math of dividing the total fees by four (to calculate fees per issue) is ridiculous and belies her ignorance regarding the complex nature of the Conservatorship Estate, and the issues that needed to be addressed by H&K to properly defend Mr. Spears from specious allegations that have threatened to tarnish his reputation as a loving, caring father who has nothing to hide, has been loyal and fiercely loving toward his daughter, sought to protect her, and manage her finances so that she can live her life the way she wants," the document reads.
The filing comes just over a month after Britney's lawyer requested that the pop star's temporary personal conservator, Jodi Montgomery, replace her father as a permanent conservator. Montgomery temporarily took over the role from Jamie after he stepped down in 2019 for health reasons. The singer's court-appointed attorney, Samuel D. Ingham III, last month filed a petition to have Montgomery remain as Britney's "care manager" on a permanent basis, according to Fox News.
It is unclear whether the role will also apply to Britney's estate, which is jointly being overseen by Jamie and Bessemer Trust, as ordered by a Los Angeles judge earlier this year.
