Bodega Head: Boy Falls 230 Feet Off Calif. Cliff; Condition Critical

A 4-year-old boy was in critical condition Monday after a 230-foot fall from a seaside cliff at Bodega Head in Sonoma County, California.

The boy was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, and fire officials told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat that he was in “stable but critical condition.”

The boy, whose name was not released, was throwing rocks near a trail before he fell, landing on the rocky beach, according to the report. Rescuers from the Bodega Bay Fire Department rappelled down the cliff to reach the boy and brought him up in a rescue basket.

“By the time he reached the top of the cliff, he was crying,” Capt. Justin Fox told the newspaper.

The rescue was at a challenging area, just south of where officials from various agencies participated in a training rescue last week.

“That’s the highest section of cliff we have,” Fox told the Press Democrat. “Also, it has that sandstone and limestone that crumbles. It’s a very challenging section of cliff as far as rescues go. Plus, there’s the ocean when you get down there.”

Agencies involved in the rescue include the Bodega Bay firefighters, State Parks officials, Coast Guard, Cal Fire, Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office, and the CHP.
