Boy Arrested for Dancing in Saudi Arabia Street

By    |   Wednesday, 23 August 2017 09:17 AM EDT

A 14-year-old boy was arrested for dancing in a street in Saudi Arabia.

The teen was questioned for "improper public behavior" and disrupting traffic and released with a warning, Reuters reported. This follows the emergence of video footage showing the boy dancing at a street crossing in Jeddah to the '90s smash hit song, "The Macarena," which went viral on social media last week.

In the video the boy, who is wearing headphones, strides to the middle of the intersection and proceeds to perform the dance moves for "The Macarena."

The video clip was initially published to social media last year but the arrest of the boy, whose nationality was unknown, was reported this week, The Telegraph noted.

The boy and his legal guardian had been summoned for questioning but were later released without charge.

"They signed a written pledge that the teen will not engage in behavior that could endanger his life and the life of others again," the interior ministry said in a statement, according to Reuters. "The notification was solely intended to warn the boy about potential consequences for his own safety, as well as to safeguard the overall safety of motorists and pedestrians."

This is not the first time that someone has been arrested for dancing in public in Saudi Arabia.

Earlier this year local pop star, Abdallah Al Shaharani, was detained after performing a dance move called dabbing, which had been banned in the conservative nation, Newsweek reported. Dabbing, a form of dancing made popular in American hip-hop, was slammed by Saudi law enforcement who said the dance move placed an emphasis on drug use in pop culture.

Last year several women were also arrested in Jeddah after they were filmed dancing at a party with men while wearing western clothing and allegedly consuming alcohol.

According to The Daily Mail, video footage of the party went viral on social media but was later passed to law enforcement officials who tracked down the location of the party by identifying key landmarks in the clip.
