New Jersey Democrat Cory Booker, who announced his bid for the White House in February, earned most of his wealth from public speaking fees and royalties, according to 10-years' worth of tax returns released on Wednesday.
The Democrat is the latest to make these records public as the 2020 election race heats up.
According to Fox News, Booker reported an income of $152,715 in 2018 for his salary, which comes mostly from public speaking fees as well as royalties generated from his book, "United," which raked in $1 million between 2015 and 2017.
Between 2009 and 2014, Booker earned a notable $2 million in speaking fees. It costs between $30,000 to $50,000 to have Booker do a talk, according to his booking agent's website, and the New Jersey Senator is willing to travel — at an additional cost.
Based on his records, Booker also reported $22,781 in taxes which, at a rate of 15 percent, is significantly lower than several other candidates. However, Fox News noted that this may be linked to Booker’s notable charitable donations.
In a two-year period, he donated nearly $460,000 to various organizations and causes, half of which were made in 2013 when he came under fire for his involvement with social media company Waywire. In response to the criticism, Booker donated stock to charities across the city.
