Bobcat's Shark Fishing Skill Photographed at Florida Beach

A bobcat waded into the Atlantic ocean off Florida where it nabbed a four-foot shark and dragged it to shore, according to a Florida man who took a picture to prove it.

John Bailey of Fort Pierce said he was walking in Sebastian Inlet State Park near Vero Beach on Monday evening when he witnessed the incident and snapped a picture of the bobcat with the shark on his cellphone, according to the Miami Herald.

Bailey told WPLG-TV he first saw the bobcat watching the shark feeding on a smaller fish in the water. Then the bobcat suddenly jumped into the water, caught the shark and dragged it onto the beach.

"Initially, it was pretty quick," said Bailey. "Spotted it, pulled it up (and) the shark floundered for a while. … I was so fascinated, I didn't think about being in danger."

Bailey said when the bobcat saw him, it dropped the shark and ran off into a nearby wooded area.

A Fish and Wildlife Facebook post said biologists believe the shark may have been an Atlantic Sharpnose, which grows to just under three feet as an adult.

The Atlantic Sharpnose is an in-shore species that can be found in surf and are also common in bays and estuaries. Adults are also found offshore. Newborns range from nine to 14 inches in length. Adults feed on small fish and crustaceans.

The bobcat broke no laws, the wildlife commission noted.

"There are no shark fishing regulations for bobcats. Just people," said the commission.

Some people, though, questioned the photo authenticity, reported the Herald.

"I can appreciate that," Bailey told the newspaper, who works as a sales representative in Fort Pierce. While Florida wildlife officials believe the photo is real, some Internet postings questioned the photo's long shadows on the beach, noted the Herald.
