Boating Accident: Utah's Lake Powell Gives Up Woman, 1 Missing

By    |   Monday, 24 June 2013 07:24 AM EDT

Authorities continued to search Monday for the body of a Utah woman who disappeared in a boating accident on Lake Powell last week after a dive team found the body of Valerie Bradshaw on the lake Sunday.

Bradshaw, 29, was found by a Utah Highway Patrol dive team about at 7:12 p.m., according to Salt Lake City's Desert News. Divers found her in 340 feet of water, the Kane County Sheriff's Office told the newspaper.

The Desert News reported that Jessica Jackman, 22, of South Jordan, Utah, remained missing. Bradshaw and Jackman were passengers in a motorboat that slammed into a houseboat on Lake Powell the morning of June 20. Lake Powell, a popular summer vacation spot, is a large man-made reservoir that sits near the Utah-Arizona border.

The diving team used a robot to recover her body, police told the Desert News. Bradshaw's body was transported to Kane County Sheriff's Office, said the newspaper.

Marilyn Jackman, 57, the mother of Jessica Jackman, was killed in the accident.

A motorboat carrying 13 people, appearing to be family members, were traveling along Lake Powell when the accident happened, the Huffington Post reported.

Kane County deputies said the six children aboard were wearing life jackets. Adrian Jackman, the boat's driver, and his 11-year-old granddaughter were airlifted to a hospital in Flagstaff, Ariz., while a third person was taken to the hospital by ambulance, said the Huffington Post. Doctors released the three later on June 20.

Jackman may have been distracted by some children on the moving boat when it collided with the houseboat near Dangling Rope Marina about 8:15 a.m., according to The Salt Lake Tribune.

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, Jackman desperately tried to avoid the houseboat at the last moment but hit the front corner of it. The collision forced the motorboat to overturn, spilling all the passengers into Lake Powell, the newspaper wrote.

Authorities told the Tribune that family members from suburban Salt Lake City appeared to be on a family vacation at the time of the accident.
