The Blue Lives Matter movement is calling for its supporters to boycott Ben and Jerry’s and its parent company Unilever after the ice cream company endorsed Black Lives Matter last week.
A statement by Blue Lives Matter said Ben and Jerry’s is "spreading false and misleading statements" and that the Black Lives Matter movement "has inspired the assassination and attempted assassination of police officers, and it costs officers their lives."
Ben and Jerry’s announced its support for Black Lives Matter in a Twitter post Thursday with an explanation on the company website for why black lives matter. While expressing respect for law enforcement officers, the company noted it was important to support the movement to bring about equality for blacks being unfairly targeted by police.
Using words such as “systemic and institutionalized racism” caused a backlash for the company, which has a long history of supporting political causes, including marriage equality.
The Blue Lives Matter boycott has been shared on Facebook nearly 30,000 times since it was posted there Monday. The movement to support police officers also pointed out that Black Lives Matter is aligned with many other political movements including reparations for slavery and shutting down charter schools.
Unilever products include Axe, Dove, Knorr, Lipton, and Vaseline. The company's website states its products are used by 2 billion people every day.
