Blue Bell Creameries ordered a nationwide recall for all of its products on Monday after two samples of its chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream tested positive for the bacteria Listeria.

Blue Bell, based in Brenham, Texas, makes ice cream, frozen yogurt, sherbet and frozen snacks and is distributed in 23 states and internationally, according to KXAS-TV. The company operates plants in Brenham, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and Sylacauga, Alabama, and the facility in Oklahoma was shuttered last month after tests showed Listeria contamination there.

CNN reported that the company has documented five cases of Listeria in Kansas and three cases in Texas.

"We're committed to doing the 100 percent right thing, and the best way to do that is to take all of our products off the market until we can be confident that they are all safe," Paul Kruse, Blue Bell chief executive officer and president said in a company statement.

The company said Blue Bell products are being pulled off the shelves at stores in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wyoming.

"We are heartbroken about this situation and apologize to all of our loyal Blue Bell fans and customers," said Kruse. "Our entire history has been about making the very best and highest quality ice cream and we intend to fix this problem. We want enjoying our ice cream to be a source of joy and pleasure, never a cause for concern, so we are committed to getting this right."

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on its website that Listeria has been linked to a several ready-to-eat products in the past, including deli meats, hot dogs, smoked seafood and store-prepared deli-salads.

"Unlike most bacteria, Listeria germs can grow and spread in the refrigerator," the FDA said. "So if you unknowingly refrigerate Listeria-contaminated food, the germs not only multiply at the cool temperature, they could contaminate your refrigerator and spread to other foods there, increasing the likelihood that you and your family will become sick."
