Country music singer Blake Shelton had one of "The Voice" contestants in tears during Monday's episode after delivering a dose of tough love.

Emma Caroline struggled to come out of her shell when she and fellow contestant Cam Anthony participated in the first head-to-head battle of the night. Shelton had selected "10,000 Hours" by Dan + Shay and Justin Bieber for the pair to perform. Dan + Shay happen to be Shelton's musical advisers and Anthony admitted during rehearsals that singing in front of the artists who wrote the song "is quite intimidating."

Caroline agreed, and her nerves became evident as she faded in the background during her performance.

"I’ve been insecure in my life caring what people think," she said, according to USA Today.

In the end, Shelton named Anthony the winner of the battle because it "looked like you were born to do that."

For Caroline, he had a lesson she needed to learn.

"It’s frustrating to know that you are that good of a singer, but I don’t know that you believe you are that great of a singer because of your body language," Shelton said.

During the Battle Round, each coach is given the opportunity to save or steal. Shelton waited until the last second to save Caroline from being eliminated. The tension had her in tears.

"Why did you have to do that to me?" Caroline said.

Shelton explained that he wanted to "scare some stage presence" into Caroline by making her believe she had been eliminated from the show.

"Emma, you have a gift, you really do," he said. "You are so much more than someone’s backup singer. You deserve to be in the front of the stage, but you got to give us something to see."

Earlier this year, Caroline spoke about her blind audition for "The Voice" and how intimidated she felt having to perform in front of some of the music industry's top artists.

"It’s hard to prepare yourself to be on that big a stage, in front of those celebrity coaches," she told Tuscaloosa News. "I don’t know that there’s a way to prepare yourself for that."

Caroline immediately piqued the interest of Shelton and Kelly Clarkson after performing Kacey Musgraves' "Slow Burn." Caroline was thrilled, but also torn over who to choose.

"Of course I wanted Blake or Kelly. Those were my two favorites," she said. "I didn’t know I’d have to choose." Clarkson tried her best to win Caroline over to her team, but she ended up going with Shelton.
