'Bitter Barista' Blogger Exposed, Then Fired for Posts on Customers

A bitter barista blogger was fired after more than two years on the job at All City Coffee in Seattle during which he apparently saved up lots of observations about the customers he served, as well as his boss.

Matt Watson, 30, also known by his rap name "Spekulation," started the anonymous "Bitter Barista" blog just a few weeks ago, featuring short Twitter-like rants about his day-to-day annoyances, such as:

"Instead of buying your kid rice-milk-hot-chocolate, just punch them in the back of the head and tell them life is full of disappointments."

“If you remind me four times that you’ve ordered decaf, guess what you won’t be getting ... ”

“What a coincidence! You have a gluten allergy, and I don’t care that you have a gluten allergy!”

"When I ask 'for here or to go?' I'm only curious what kind of cup you want… Not what your plans for the day are."

He also wrote about his boss: "I like to use a lot of big words when I tweet, that way if my boss ever finds my twitter account, he won't understand any of it."

The page gained so much traction that many wanted to know who was behind it.

A website called Sprudge.com, which covers coffee news, events, rumors, and innuendos, did a little digging and wrote an article revealing Watson's identity on Feb. 7, including where he worked and linking to the coffee shop's Yelp page, ABC News reports.

"To the Bitter Barista, your milk substitution choices are Hilter-esque, your requests for flavoring akin to puppy rape," Llewellyn Sinclair wrote in the post. "Workplace frustrations are fine, but they should be vented over margaritas after work, not on your Twitter account mid-shift."

Once Sinclair exposed the blogger, Watson's boss was not amused and promptly fired him.

The barista defended himself, claiming the website was merely satire that focused on only five percent of the customers who made his job harder, not all customers.

He also said he kept the job to support his dreams of being a rapper, which he told the Seattle Times is common to the field.

The thing about baristas, is, "that person is probably an artist, overqualified, people with pretty much college education across the board,” he told the paper.

One of his posts addressed the hoopla.

"How come everyone else on the internet gets to be mean? I'm so confused," he wrote on the website.

By Wednesday morning, he amended his blog with an introductory page that says," "By entering this site, I affirm the following statements are true: I understand what satire is, I will not take this site literally, I am not a comment troll, I don't believe everything I read, I have a f***ing sense of humor."

He told local news station KIRO TV he was surprised to be outed.

"It's actually like the Twitter coffee culture which is why I was so surprised that I was targeted and they just didn't understand that it was satirical," he said. "The guys who wrote the article compared me to one of the Columbine shooters which is like really crazy."

Watson told the Seattle Times that he has already received offers from a few other coffee shops in the city.
