The creator of the popular “Calvin and Hobbes” comic strip, Bill Watterson, has revealed his first work in 19 years, a poster for a documentary about comics.

The “Stripped” poster features artwork by Watterson, but the production reached out to numerous comic strip illustrators, writers, and creators to put together what the website calls “a love letter to comic strips.”

“It brings together the world’s best cartoonists to talk about the art form they love, and what happens to it as newspapers die,” the documentary site said.

Watterson wrote about the antics of the devilish Calvin and ever-faithful Hobbes from 1985 to 1995.

He also is featured on a trailer for "Stripped."

“In the right hands, a comic strip attains a beauty and an elegance that really, I’d put against any other art,” Watterson says on the trailer.

“Stripped” features interviews with “over 90 ... [of] the world’s best cartoonists,” the trailer said.

The documentary explores the future of comic strips as their traditional form of publication — the newspaper — struggles to stay afloat in an online world.

Dave Kellett and Fred Schroeder are co-directors of the project. They were pleased that Watterson, who is known to be reclusive, chose to be interviewed and also provide the poster art.

“It seemed like he really wanted to express some thoughts about comics and cartooning, where they had been and where they are going,” Schroeder told The New York Times.

The documentary can be pre-ordered from iTunes and will be on DVD in April.
