Bill Murray is Xavier’s superfan, as evidenced by his celebration of the team’s Sweet 16 upset of No. 2 ranked Arizona Wildcats on Thursday. He's also a good luck charm.
The actor's celebration took center stage following the win – a win that means an Elite 8 appearance in the NCAA tournament for the Musketeers, according to For The Win.
Just months ago, Murray went viral as the Chicago Cubs were defeating the Cleveland Indians in the World Series, putting an end to a 108-year championship drought for the MLB team.
Murray’s son, Luke, is an assistant coach for Xavier, noted the New York Daly News.
“It was really like a ‘Platoon’ movie or ‘The Dirty Dozen’ where a different guy comes in and saves everyone’s bacon,” Murray said about the 11th-seeded team’s performance Thursday night. “One after the other they all took turns, and gosh, it was fun to see them win. Gosh, that was fun.”
Murray referenced the Cubs when describing how exhilarating it felt to watch Xavier play, noted Sporting News.
“You felt it in your whole body, your whole being, your whole history, that Cub thing,” he said. “And this is similar to that because it’s my son.”
According to People magazine, Murray has yet to miss a March Madness Xavier this year.
In fact, there are some people who believe the 66-year-old famed actor is every bit of a “good luck charm” for the team.
“The power of Bill Murray…This is his year in sports…As a fan of course,” NBA player Dwayne Wade tweeted.
There were others on Twitter who got a kick out of Murray’s good fortune as well.
