Betty Cantrell, the newly crowned Miss America, was asked her opinion on Tom Brady and the "Deflategate" scandal at Sunday night's pageant, but the Georgia beauty queen's answer probably wasn't what the New England Patriots quarterback wanted to hear.
Cantrell, the reigning Miss Georgia, was hit with the controversial sports question on an issue that has divided football fans during the
question and answer portion of the pageant, according to E! Online.
"Did he cheat? That's a really good question. I'm not sure," Cantrell initially said in her 20-second response. "I think I'd have to be there and see the ball and feel it and make sure it was deflated or not deflated. If there was question there, then yes, I think he cheated. If there was any question to be had, I think that he definitely cheated and he should have been suspended for that. That's not fair."
"The question (among others about gun control, Kim Davis, and Planned Parenthood funding) was roundly mocked on Twitter, but Cantrell was still awarded the crown and a $50,000 scholarship
at the end of the competition," The Washington Post reported. "She also impressed the judges by wearing a crop-top evening gown."
In the end, Cantrell hung on to win, beating out first-runner up Miss Mississippi and Miss Colorado.
But most of the Internet continued to buzz over her Deflategate answer.
Brady was initially slapped with a four-game suspension after it was discovered earlier this year that the air had been let out of the Patriots game balls during the AFC Championship game against the Indianapolis Colts. A judge later lifted the football star's suspension.
